Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a specific type of anxiety disorder that is comprised of repetitive obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors or rituals aimed at modulating anxiety. OCD is understood to have clear biological underpinnings and often responds very well to Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Occasionally, some people will benefit from short-term anxiolytic medications to assist them with breakthrough anxiety. However, behavioral-based therapies do not encourage the use of such medications, as they are counter-productive to exposure protocols. Recent research has indicated that for some individuals, a low dose atypical antipsychotic may be helpful. Exposure and Response/Ritual Prevention (ERP)is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD. It is not uncommon for individuals with OCD to also experience some level of depression. Regular exercise can also be extremely helpful in managing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Children who develop sudden OCD symptoms (especially food-related obsessions) should get a medical evaluation to rule out Pediatric Autoimmune Neuro-Psychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus (PANDAS). OCD can become very severe and debilitating if not treated. With appropriate treatment, the large majority of individuals are able to successfully overcome their symptoms.
