Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is an adaptive and critical part of human behavior. At its most basic level, anxiety serves as a warning system that a person is in danger, and helps them to take action. Sometimes however, this system can malfunction, leading individuals to become hypersensitive to anxiety signals and overestimate the level of danger present. Anxiety disorders can take many forms, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, Specific Phobias and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Treatment for anxiety disorders varies with the specific clinical presentation, but typically includes some form of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy with exposure components. For some individuals, Mindfulness-Based Behavior Therapies are more helpful. Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI & SNRI) can also be a necessary part of treatment to help control symptoms. Beta-Blockers, benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics are sometimes used as well. It is not uncommon for individuals with anxiety disorders to also experience some level of depression. Regular exercise can also be extremely helpful in the treatment of anxiety and depression. The actual cause of anxiety disorders is unclear, but research suggests it is a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Anxiety disorders can become very severe and debilitating if not treated. With appropriate treatment, the large majority of individuals are able to successfully overcome their anxiety symptoms.
